Taking the long view

Somebody at BBC News needs to reconsider their mathematical skills.

Most schoolchildren will tell you that 100 kilometres per hour is about 60 miles per hour. A cursory glance at a car speedometer would also reveal that fact.

From that, it's easy to work out that 10 km is about 6 miles.

Even if that's beyond you, just type '10000m in miles' into Google search and you'll get the answer.

See? Just over 6 miles.

Not surprisingly, the BBC's accuracy is miles out.

Loch Mess

Those of you who are planning to visit Scotland should steer clear of using Google Maps as a guide. Especially if you're hoping to spot the Loch Ness Monster.

As its name suggests, Nessie's home is Loch Ness. You can see it clearly marked on Google Maps lying to the South West of Inverness.

On the same map, however, you'll also see, to the North East of Inverness, a stretch of water known - only to Google - as Scotland Loch Ness Lake. To everyone else of sane mind, that is actually the Moray Firth.

No wonder it's been difficult to find Nessie.

Clearly we've been looking in the wrong place all this time.
